An entrepreneurial living learning community, or ELLC, is a purpose-driven community for likeminded students that brings together community, housing and targeted experiential programming with training to support students in their efforts to create academic, social and career related outcomes. ELLCs provide all the necessary resources together in one place to incubate, expand and accelerate the entrepreneurial mindset.
At its best, an ELLC offers a creatively dense and resource rich environment that encourages all students to grow as creators or entrepreneurs.
STRT On Campus by American Campus Communities (ACC) is a customized entrepreneurial program housed within a STRT entrepreneurial living learning community that is focused on creating a multi-disciplinary experiential learning environment which serves as a catalyst for inspiration, engagement and investment. In a manner that builds upon the unique assets of your campus, STRT enhances current entrepreneurship offerings and improves outcomes for the university and its students.
While universities have been growing and investing in there entreprenurial programming, often students feel thier needs are not being fully met. Not every student entreprenuer will pursue a business degree or degree in entreprenuership.
Students from a broad array of academic disciplines and career goals are increasingly identifying as creators and entrepreneurs, but they often lack access to the resources, training and experiences needed to pursue their ventures, both pre- and post-graduation. The STRT On Campus ELLC, as an integral part of the institution’s comprehensive entrepreneurship programming, focuses on teaching the creative and entrepreneurial mindset rather than focusing on any particular business ideas.
The strategic relationship is born from being “best in class” and from creating and offering to our university partners a “whole” that is greater than “the sum of its parts” – ACC as the best-in-class housing developer and operator and STRT as one of very few experts in programming, marketing and operating an on-campus entrepreneurial program. Our goal is to work closely with our university partners to create a customized, high quality, multi-dimensional student experience on your campus in the rapidly growing area of entrepreneurship education.

ACC will consider any and all of the primary ownership and financial structures used to execute a public-private-partnership, P3, in today’s marketplace. Two of the biggest variables among these structures are 1) the level of risk shared by ACC and its P3 partner and 2) the level of responsibility and control retained by the university.
STRT was co-founded by the Executive Director of Lassonde Entrepreneurial Institute at the University of Utah, which has been widely recognized for innovating how entrepreneurship education is programmed and delivered. While STRT did not develop and does not operate Lassonde, STRT’s program and design is based upon and inspired by Lassonde.
One metric to measure success resulting from bringing a fully integrated entrepreneurship living-learning community, like STRT, to a campus is the increase in start-up activity. The following graph illustrates the increase in start-up businesses at the University of Utah from 2002 to 2022 with the key takeaway being the dramatic increase in start-ups resulting from the opening of Lassonde Studios in 2016.
STRT’s role is to facilitate the connection of entrepreneurs to any resources necessary to bring their idea to fruition and, to that end , STRT provides abundant programmatic and advisory resources and services to all STRT residents regardless of the financial feasibility or quality of their business ideas. Funding resources offered as part of STRT’s business model are competition based and come from a venture fund that is set aside in an annual budget to invest in promising start-ups. Based on the University’s goals and risk tolerances, STRT On Campus by ACC will work with the University to create a structure that allows the University to participate in the outcomes of the investment fund.
Absolutely not. As envisioned, the STRT common area amenities intentionally create a purposeful collision of ideas and thoughts. The full benefits of the STRT program is sustained by having an open, engaging environment where collaboration and commerce can freely take place. The community’s vibrant spaces will become a popular gathering spot and an asset for the entire campus.
Depending on the institution’s goals and the scope of the customized relationship between University and STRT On Campus, we can provide a full array of expertise to your campus including the design, development, construction, financing and operating expertise of ACC and the entrepreneurship design, marketing and detailed programming expertise of STRT. If desired by our university partner, STRT On Campus will work in tandem with the University to develop a customized shared responsibility matrix which stipulates the provider of services to the overall project.
Universities have the ability to create an entrepreneurial living learning community. However, like most P3’s, STRT On Campus offers a university various risk mitigations and speed-to-market advantages that are worth considering and that can prove advantageous to a university. In this case however, beyond those traditional P3 housing considerations and benefits, STRT On Campus offers a unique expertise in a new and emerging discipline that goes beyond traditional P3 housing collaborations. For this reason, some universities will do a better job than others in implementing and executing their entrepreneurship living learning communities. STRT On Campus brings knowledge and experience in this highly specialized area and will work with its university partners to expedite the pre-development and programming processes and greatly increase the likelihood of project and program success.
The STRT On Campus ELLC Roundtable brings together the brightest minds in the space to discuss the future of entrepreneurial living learning communities (ELLC).
The ELLC Roundtable is a virtual event hosted on Zoom on October 14, 15 and 16 from 12:00PM to 2:30PM Pacific Time. The event will have 3 sessions per day, with unique speakers for each day.
We'd love to have you speak! If you are interested in speaking at the 2024 ELLC Roundtable, please send an email to social@strt.com.
The STRT On Campus ELLC Roundtable is free for all attendees.
